The Cairns Post

IT’S BEEN A LONG ROAD — TIME TO MOVE ON

-

IN the never-ending news cycle it’s good to pause regularly and take a look back. In the world of newspapers in particular it’s a powerful thing to pore over old editions and even more so front pages.

The Covid-19 pandemic for journalists has been like a never-ending natural disaster to cover.

For almost two years we’ve been tapping away at our keyboards delivering essential and informative updates and stories as the pandemic infiltrated every part of our lives.

It feels like yesterday when the Cairns Post packed out the Cairns Convention Centre for its Future Tourism forum. The frightening reality of Covid was just starting to truly reveal itself.

Uncertainty and disbelief was plain to see on the faces of even the most battle-hardened tourism leaders.

Nobody had ever been through anything like this.

For months in 2020 the Cairns Post toiled away remotely across the region during lockdown without readers or leaders having a clue.

We just got on with the job. Through it all the Cairns Post continued what it has always done for almost 140 years – we campaigned for the betterment of our region and those who live and work here.

Whether it be for locals to “Keep it in Cairns”, calling for more funding for the tourism industry or making a Call to Arms for people to get vaccinated, we’ve been there for you.

The Cairns Post even had time to roll out a successful Operation 2025 campaign for a new university hospital. It’s been heartbreaking to see people leave, businesses close and the fear of the unknown etched in faces.

Soon the borders will come down and we’ll face a new chapter.

We will take one day at a time.

It’s all you can ever do.
