Club finally gets RV park

- MARK MURRAY

AN EIGHT-YEAR vision will become a reality for a Far North golf club next week when a new recreation vehicle park opens next to its popular course.

The Mossman Golf club has long pushed for RVs to have access to their 18-hole course and have finally been granted their wish, and they’re wasting no time offering it to travellers, with the facility expected to be open “within a week to 10 days”.

Club spokesman and captain John Carney said 18 unpowered sites would run the length of the fairway at the back of the course and were “ready to go”.

“We have tried to get this through council for eight years,” he said.

“(Mayor) Michael Kerr has been behind it 100 per cent since day one, we have had a few hiccups along the way but we have got over them and it looks like we’ll be opening within about a week to 10 days.

“The infrastructure is there and we are ready to go.”

Douglas Shire Council has offered reduced fees and payments to get the venture off the ground, approving a deferred payment proposal for the golf club, situated 20 minutes north of Port Douglas.

Public toilets have been upgraded and an $8000 net installed to stop errant golf balls from hitting RVs.

Mr Carney said they hoped to attract keen golfers.

“Our real objective is to get people that want to play golf, we’ll be doing discounted rates for them,” he said.

“They can stay for seven nights and play golf for four days, and they can use the facilities at the club-house, bar and golf course.”

It comes after a councilrun RV park concept was knocked back at an ordinary council meeting in January.

Cr Kerr said the golf club concept “is a good result” and council was happy to support it.

“The previous proposal, we were going to use council land and use the RV association of Australia to operate an RV Park on our land and they would pay us rent,” he said.

“Whereas this is just a community organisation doing an RV Park on the land that they are already leasing from council.”

Sites will range from $22$25 a night.
