Grog ban ends

-

TAKEAWAY liquor is now allowed again in a remote Indigenous community, under changes aimed at tackling binge drinking and putting a stop to sly grog. From last weekend, Kowanyama locals will be able to carry 4.5 litres – or 12 cans – of beer and pre-mixed spirits with less than 4 per cent alcohol by volume, as well as two litres of unfortified wine. There had been a zero carriage limit in the community for about 20 years, although alcohol had been available to be bought and consumed at a licensed premises since 2014.
