COLD SNAP TO BRING SNOW TO ALPINE

- MADELEINE ACHENZA

THE southeastern states experienced the first taste of winter on the weekend and the cold snap is set to bring even more frosty conditions.

Snow could dust the alpine regions of NSW and Victoria by the end of the week as the cold front that brought icy temperatures to capital cities moves further inland.

Snow has been forecast to arrive in both alpine regions on Wednesday, for the first time this year.

“Unlike some winter cold fronts that lack the deep humidity necessary for good snow formation, this system looks to contain abundant mid-level moisture,” Weatherzone meteorologist Jess Miskelly said.

A secondary cold front arriving on Friday should lead to 36 hours of snow.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting fine weather to start the week in NSW with unsettled weather on the horizon for Wednesday when a cool change will bring showers to most of the state.

Minor hail and cool gusty winds will arrive in the south of the state on Thursday.

The high-pressure system will then move into Victoria on Wednesday bringing scattered showers, hail and snow.

Snow showers are predicted for Thursday in parts of the Alps above 1000m.
