STUDENTS ON RUNNING HIGH
IN Term 1, the inaugural Newman Catholic College Cross Country was run.
All of the Year 7 students ran the 3km course around the back of the Nguma Bada Campus of James Cook University.
It was an exceptionally hot and sunny day in Smithfield, with the students from each house dressed in their colourful uniforms.
An acknowledgment of country, a prayer and some tips were undertaken and then we were on the way.
Mr Starmer, ex-Northern Pride superstar, was the pace runner for the 3km of undulating tracks surrounded by rainforest and gently running creeks.
The track was bumpy and dry and everybody was finally at the water station trying to get as much water as they could before running away.
The boys competition was interesting.
The heat was a factor with many different students taking turns in the lead.
The girls who had started before the boys were on the way back and watching as the boys started their race.
One-by-one students came running into the finish line, some racing and some ready to finish and get out of the hot sun. After finishing the race, Mr Dockray organised for everybody to get a cold icy pole.
After enjoying the treat, all the students and teachers came to the library to start the presentation.
Medals were presented to all of the first, second and third place runners in each division. I was excited to see everybody clapping.
Everybody left feeling proud and happy with themselves.
We had finished our first cross country at Newman Catholic College.
Thank you to all of the teachers who helped organise and run the cross country.
We were especially grateful for the parents and carers who came to support all of the runners.
