PRIDE SHOWN FOR DIGGERS

SAM GILMORE, MADELEINE WEBSTER, JARRED ASKIN, WILLOW SEE KEE, YEAR 3, OUR LADY HELP OF CHRISTIANS

ON Friday April 22, OLHOC school had an ANZAC assembly to remember soldiers who died in the war and defence forces who defended our country.

The Year 6 leaders told us about why we commemorate ANZAC Day.

Some Year 6 students took turns playing a drum beat to introduce each part of the assembly.

First, a local veteran, Mr Glenn Cochrane gave a short speech about when he was in the army.

Then Mrs Heather Cochrane, who recently retired from her role as a library assistant, was presented with a certificate for OLHOC being the state winner of the 2021 Anzac Day Schools’ Award.

Last year, Mrs Cochrane put in a lot of effort to interview local veterans and create an amazing interactive display in the library using QR codes so students could watch the short videos.

The display also included a Wall of Remembrance where OLHOC families could send in a photograph of a relative who had been or is currently in the defence forces.

To enter the competition, Mrs Cochrane then had to write about all the things she had organised and send in photos. The students were amazed to hear that the prize for winning was $3000.

Next, music was played as children chosen from each year level, carried handmade wreaths with poppies to the front of the hall.

After a reading from the Bible and some prayers, all the students stood up and listened to The Ode, The Last Post and observed one minute of silence.

Then we sang the National Anthem.

The assembly finished with the whole school singing “Justice and Freedom”.

On Monday April 25, our school captains Isla Bain and Koki Kono carried a wreath during the dawn service at the Esplanade.
