UNITED IN RESPECT FOR OUR HEROES
INDIANA SCHWARTZ, YEAR 7, NEWMAN CATHOLIC COLLEGE
IN Week 1 of this term, Newman Catholic College gathered to commemorate Anzac Day for 2022.
All our students and staff came together in Newman Hall to pray and listen to serving members from the Australian Defence Force. Navy officers from the HMAS Shepparton spoke to all gathered at our school.
Fr Dariusz Osinski came to the College to help us to pray.
We also were joined by
Daniel Clayton, who played the Last Post and the Rouse on his bugle.
Dr Graham opened the service with her address. We were honoured to be addressed by SubLieutenant Benjamin Gaskin, who is a serving officer on the HMAS Shepparton.
HMAS Shepparton is a hydrographic survey vessel that is stationed in Cairns.
Sub-Lt Gaskin spoke about how he had commemorated Anzac Day since he was young and that as a serving officer, it was important for our country to come together to remember the sacrifices that people have made to help make our country so great.
We were also appreciative to have other special guests SubLieutenant
Sarah Ellwood from HMAS Shepparton and Miss Kristan Rice, the President of the Edge Hill and Cairns West RSL, to join our ceremony.
Many of our students and special guests laid wreaths in the ceremony.
Our Learner Mentor Groups made the wreaths throughout the week so they would be ready in time for our assembly.
We are grateful to officers from HMAS Shepparton, the RSL and Fr Dariusz for helping to make our commemoration so meaningful.
