We’re working on it: Selwood

- JOSH BARNES

GEELONG’S concerning slump at the coalface has been shrugged off as a by-product of the club’s new game style with skipper Joel Selwood saying the Cats are still working through their revamped system.

The Cats were one of the most brutal sides around the ball in recent seasons, ranking first for contested possession and second for ground ball differentials in 2021.

Taking out a dominant effort against lowly North Melbourne in round 6, Geelong has tumbled down the rankings this year, ranking 11th and 13th respectively in the same stats, according to Champion Data.

The Cats have notably played with the ball out in the open more this season, cutting down on stoppages and uncontested marks as they play with more flow and freedom.

Selwood blamed those changes for his side’s different look around the ball, with Fremantle noticeably cleaner and sharper when the ball hit the deck in Saturday’s three-point upset win.

“(It is) a little bit of a byproduct, we went to the contest a lot more last year and slowed the ball down and marked the ball,” he said.
