Labor to focus on childcare

- ANDREAS NICOLA

OPPOSITION spokeswoman for early childhood education Amanda Rishworth will arrive in Cairns on Wednesday to discuss Labor’s childcare plan.

Data from ABS shows over the 12 months to March, the average cost of childcare rose 4.2 per cent nationally.

“Childcare costs will ease for 6941 families in the electorate of Leichhardt under Labor’s landmark childcare policy,” Ms Rishworth said. “New data released on Wednesday confirmed out-of-pocket childcare costs are out of control for Australian families under the Morrison government.”

Ms Rishworth said investing in early education would get more people back to work.

“Labor’s plan for cheaper childcare will make it easier for 6941 families across Leichhardt to get ahead,” she said.

“An Albanese Labor government will lift the childcare maximum subsidy rate to 90 per cent for the first child, meaning 96 per cent of families using childcare will be better off.”
