BUYING a house is not for the faint-hearted today.

We bought a house package in 1998 and we live in the smallest house in Cairns.

Our interest rate at the time was 16.95 per cent.

We do not have four bedrooms, two garages and two bathrooms etc, etc.

I thought that living off mince for the next 20 years was a bit hard but we had a home.

We worked seven days a week for years and at last, we and the dogs and cats ate well.

It is hard now, just as it was 30 years ago, but we were more moderate in what we needed for our family.
