Collectable treasures at quirky new store
COLLECTORS of the quirky and unusual will be spoiled for choice at a new Aladdin’s cave chocked with collectables now trading from a heritage-listed bank building on the Atherton Tablelands.
Self-confessed accumulators of offbeat vintage pieces Rob and Karen Skirde have relocated from Silkwood to Millaa Millaa with a dream of creating Checkered Past Vintage and Collectables.
“We like retro and quirky things, we see something unusual and we have to have it,” he said. “We are not an op shop and not an antique shop, we are something in between.”
Mr Skirde said much of the stock had been collected from garage sales, barn finds and the internet since 2006.
“It gets to the stage that you have that much stuff in boxes you forget what you actually have,” he said. “And all these things rekindle memories for a lot of people.”
Everything from automotive memorabilia, number plates, antique cameras, Star Wars merchandise, toy figurines and retro advertisements are available at the Millaa Millaa shop.
Slowly strangled by a business downturn and lack of international visitors to the famous waterfalls nearby, the tiny Tablelands town appears to be emerging from the doldrums as new residents take up retail ventures.
