BRING ON BIRMINGHAM
Mundie one of 16 debutants in Commonwealth Games swimming team
CAIRNS teenager Joel Mundie has achieved his goal of earning Commonwealth Games selection, with the 17year-old swimmer named as part of the 27-athlete strong group for Birmingham.
Mundie was at the Gold Coast on Thursday for the announcement, confirming he will be one of 16 debutants in the Commonwealth Games pool later this year.
Mundie, who is trained locally by Andrew “Herbie” Howard, has had transverse myelitis since he was six months old.
The neurological disorder results in an inflamed spinal cord, causing him to require a wheelchair. It was during pool treatment for his condition that Mundie realised he could still be a more than capable swimmer.
In the six years Mundie has swam competitively, the teen has netted gold medals at state, and national level, in most events. His preferred strokes are the 50m butterfly, as well as 250m supported international medley and freestyle.
And he will now look forward to the chance to test himself against some of the world’s best swimmers.
