Stingers pull off a major upset win

-

TRINITY Stingers have managed to pull off a major upset against Brothers in the form of a 6-0 thrashing in Cairns Hockey’s a-grade competition.

Arguably the men’s premierships favourites so far this season, Brothers were taken to task by the Stingers in the first games since the under-18 national championships.

“There wasn’t too much in depth thought or conversation into our strategy Friday night, we simply wanted to mark up defensively,” Trinity coach Rod Taylor said.

“Try and force the turn over and do our best to keep possession against a tenacious and energetic Brothers team; provided we could do that and each line do their jobs well, we would move forward and hopefully create opportunities.

“I think getting on the board first and early, then followed by a second, created a confidence in the team we hadn’t reached in a long time, and it snowballed.”

Stingers’ Brent Garske led with two goals, and was joined by teammates Damon Gordon-Moore, Brenton Neville, Rohan Sparkes, Dan Ginnaw.

A slightly less one-sided affair was had between Souths and Saints, with Ryan Coffey scoring the game’s only goal for a 1-0 Saints win.

In the women’s competition. Brothers took a 2-0 win against the Stingers, but coach Sean O’Connor was eager to see more from his team.

“A pretty disappointing return to play after an extended break,” he said. “While we are grateful to take the points, we have some work to do to get back to the dynamic play that we started the season with.”

Kailtin Dennis scored two goals in Souths’ 3-0 win against Saints.
