IT’S ALL SWELL AND HIGH WATER FOR KAYAKER

- YASHEE SHARMA

THE Bureau of Meteorology has warned of life threatening flash flooding in Far North regions as the wet weather hits its peak.

BOM duty forecaster Pieter Claassen said the downpours were an ongoing situation in the region and residents should brace for the worst of it on Wednesday morning.

“Areas south of Cairns will have the most rainfall, there’s 100 to 200mm in the next 24 hours for Cassowary Coast,” he said.

Noting that Cassowary Coast will receive the brunt of the bad weather, Mr Claassen said there’s expected to be life threatening flash flooding for the area.

“There are minor flood warnings for Mulgrave, Russell, Tully and Herbert rivers,” he said.

“It’s not the best time to go out, stay on top of the flood warnings.”

One person who won’t be letting the heavy rain deter his outdoor adventures is Stratford kayaker Ryan Butler.

“Heavy rain is very good for us, we love the rain,” he said.

Eager to see the creeks flood up a little, Mr Butler said the rapid waters were perfect for their sport.

“It’s definitely dangerous, we just take precautions,” he said.
