Mum’s big fundraising impact
A FAR North mother has been announced as the Fundraiser of the Year at the 2022 Stroke Foundation Awards.
Moyamoya Australia founder Nicola Baker from Ravenshoe was recognised for her efforts after taking part in the Stroke Foundation’s physical activity campaign Stride4Stroke for the eighth year. Her team raised almost $5000.
Ms Baker created Moyamoya Australia after her son Jed Baker had a stroke at the age of 11.
Her son is now 18 and Ms Baker aims to educate people about the disease.
Moyamoya is a rare disease caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain.
“There’s a link between moyamoya and a stroke because it causes people to stroke out,” Ms Baker said.
“I try to raise awareness about strokes as you can have one at any time. It is not just an old person’s disease.”
While Ms Baker has her own foundation she has tried to help others.
“We fundraise for Moyamoya Australia but with that fundraising the intention has always been to try and pay forward to other foundations where there is going to be a benefit to moyamoya,” she said.
At the weekend Ms Baker also presented a cheque of $10,000 to the Stroke Foundation.
Ms Baker was unable to receive the award at the Stroke Foundation Awards but she did get her award at the Aussie Locums Blue Tie Gala Ball on Saturday.
Stroke Foundation chief executive officer Sharon McGowan congratulated Ms Baker for her efforts.
“Nicola is demonstrating a lifelong commitment to supporting her son and advocating for research which will help many more people affected by stroke,” Ms McGowan said.
“The indication of just how Nicola’s ongoing efforts have impacted others in the community shone through in the nominations for this award, as so many individuals wrote in to share their admiration and thanks for her work.”
The award Ms Baker won was one of seven aimed at recognising people who go above and beyond.
