SCOMO’S BET ON THE HOUSE
ALLOWING younger Australians to dip into their retirement nest eggs to buy a home was at the centre of Scott Morrison’s last-ditch reelection pitch, with the Prime Minister using the Coalition’s campaign launch in Queensland to proclaim he was “just warming up” and needed a second term.
In a pitch designed in part to remind Australians of the government’s achievements during the unprecedented times of early Covid-19, Mr Morrison urged voters to stay the course in order to secure a “strong economy and a strong future”.
There was focus too on the importance of national security and the need to “protect ourselves” and stand up to “those who seek to coerce us”.
The Coalition, for the first time since 2013, held its campaign launch in the Sunshine State – signalling the importance of Queensland to a fourth term.
The subdued launch in Brisbane – deliberately designed to feel like a grassroots party event – was attended by Liberal luminaries John Howard and Tony Abbott and included major housing-related policy announcements.
