Wenzel takes on the world – and wins
“When I first got on the world rankings, it was always a goal of mine to reach the top 10, and then eventually get to masters in the future,” he said.
“To reach world No.9 this early in my career was just a huge realisation to me of how good I have actually gotten and how good I have continued to get over the last couple of years.”
Wenzel said the opportunity to travel overseas and represent Australia was a “huge goal”.
“I’m super happy to have Fred (Lay, coach) and all the guys coach me along the way,” the St Andrews College student said.
“To be able to travel with the rest of the guys is just such a cool experience.
“It was great to see all the players I’ve idolised over the years and being able to watch them up close.”
Lay said his pupil’s upbeat attitude had helped him succeed, as well as serve as a role model for younger athletes.
“We have worked on his mindset, and I think that helped him grow as a player,” Lay said.
As for his idol Dylan Alcott, Wenzel said he helped him find his own path to becoming a talented tennis player.
“He (Alcott) was (my idol) at the start,” he said. “He helped me find what I wanted to do in the start, my passion for playing tennis.”
For now, Wenzel will take the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to his game.
“The next goal for me would be just keep doing what I’m doing,” he said.
“My closer goals would be to make the junior masters in the next couple of years.”
