FEED AND HOUSE PEOPLE

-

BRYAN Peach (CP, 18/05) points out that it is “incumbent on all governments to provide the fundamentals of life, that of food and shelter to all its peoples” and I agree.

Australia once had a federal public housing scheme from the Chifley-Menzies era building 15,000 houses per year when our population was just over 10 million and this equates to about 38,500 houses per year at today’s population.

This election, the Greens propose an enhanced Federal Housing Trust be tasked with building 50,000 modest houses per year for rental, owner-occupier, and shared equity pools.

The Real Estate Institute also suggests 50,000/year is needed. Phillip Musumeci, Greens candidate for Leichhardt
