1848 OTTO LILIENTHAL German aviator
Lilienthal was the first person to make well-documented, repeated, successful flights with gliders and he was able to develop the concept of the modern wing. Lilienthal’s glider stalled and crashed in 1896. He broke his neck and died the next day.
1900 HANS FRANK Nazi war criminal
Frank served as head of the General Government in Nazioccupied Poland in World War II. He instituted a reign of terror against the population and was involved in the extermination of Jews. Frank was found guilty of war crimes and executed.
1933 GARY BURDEN American artist
Burden was one of the pioneers of the concept of album cover art. He created album covers for Neil Young for 35 years, but also designed covers for performers including The Doors, The Eagles, and Joni Mitchell.
1936 ROBERT SANGSTER English thoroughbred owner
Sangster’s horses won 27 European Classics and more than 100 Group-One races, including two Epson derbies, four Irish derbies, two French Derbies and three Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes. His Beldale Ball won the 1980 Melbourne Cup.
1944 JOHN NEWCOMBE Australian tennis player
Newcombe is one of only a few men to have attained the world No. 1 ranking in singles and doubles. At the majors, he won seven singles titles (three Wimbledon, two Australian and two US) and a then-record 17 doubles titles.
1958 DREW CAREY American comedian
After serving in the US Marine Corps and making a name for himself in stand-up comedy, Carey gained stardom in his sitcom, The Drew Carey Show.
1974 KEN JENNINGS American game show contestant
Jennings is the highest-earning US game show contestant in history, having won money on five different game shows, including more than $4.5m on Jeopardy. His Jeopardy winning streak of 74 wins remains the record.
