Sharks circle CDRL’s top spot after massive win on road
MOSSMAN-Port Douglas have applied the blowtorch to the top teams in the Cairns District Rugby League after a dominant 40-12 victory against fellow contenders Kangaroos.
The Mooroobool club held a 12-4 lead at the break after tries to Jack Thomas and Ty Millard, but the Sharks lifted in the second half to run in six unanswered four-pointers.
Sharks forward Nelson Gibuma scored a double, showing his power as he bounced off one tackle, held off two wouldbe defenders, and ran over a third to bring the sides level just after halftime. And from there the visitors didn’t look back as they put Kangaroos to the sword.
Before the game, first-year Mossman-Port Douglas coach Joel Marama told the Cairns Post that if the Sharks’ spine fired they would be tough to stop, and it proved true.
The prediction depended on the Sharks’ forwards laying a decent platform, which they did more effectively the longer the game went.
The call to move Robbie Amber to hooker has proved a masterstroke by Marama.
Usually in the halves, Amber has brought his outstanding vision and decisionmaking to the crucial dummyhalf position, and the Sharks have thrived since then.
They face a test in the form of premiers Yarrabah this Saturday. The Seahawks beat Southern Suburbs 32-12 as they returned to form following a slow start to the season.
