FOR the last two weeks of term 3 in our library lessons, OLHOC students learnt about getting prepared for natural disasters by trying to win a competition.

The prize was to win a visit from Johnathan Thurston to our school.

After returning our books, the teacher read a book by Jackie French.

In Week 9 it was about floods and in Week 10 it was about cyclones.

We also watched a video each week about preparing to get ready for a natural disaster.

We learnt that when there is a disaster you need to pack a lot of things to evacuate and go to the safest place possible.

Some of the things we should pack in a suitcase are water, first aid kit, games for if we get bored, a blanket and cushion to sleep on, your special documents, toiletries, and a tin food opener to open tin food.

We also need to remember our pets and food for them too.

We learnt that in a cyclone we should tie up stuff in our

backyard that will fly away.

We were told to talk to our parents about cyclones and what we had to get ready. Talking about floods and cyclones made some children feel nervous and scared.

Then we did a worksheet about preparing for natural disasters.

The first worksheet got us to draw our family putting all the stuff that is laying outside, inside our house and cleaning up all the things on the floor.

The second worksheet

made us cross out the things that you shouldn’t put in an emergency kit and colour in the things that you should put in an emergency kit.

Year 4 got to play a Disaster Snakes and Ladders game and Year 6 played an online game called the “Get Ready Challenge”.

The librarian, Ms Majer, took photos of students doing the different activities and posted them into the competition. We hope that our school will win.
