TOMIC CONTINUES WINNING RUN

- EMMA GREENWOOD

BERNARD Tomic’s ranking is likely to take another substantial jump after he won his second successive ITF tournament in Cancun.

Tomic, whose world ranking had slipped below 800 this year, had not won a tournament for four years before victory in an ITF M15 event in Cancun last month.

And he has triumphed again in the Mexican party capital, winning another M15 event, beating Alexander Cozbinov of Moldova 7-6 6-3.

It was Tomic’s 10th consecutive victory after his last Cancun tournament a fortnight ago, and like last time, he did not drop a set.

While it’s a massive improvement on what had been a wretched run of results over the past couple of years, it is not yet an indication the former world No.17 will be competitive on the best tour in the world.

Tomic, who turns 30 this month, may have notched back-to-back wins but the ITF Challenger tournaments are two rungs below the ATP level at which he once thrived.

The Gold Coaster reignited his feud with Nick Kyrgios last week, with the pair trading barbs during fan Q&A sessions on Instagram.

Tomic later took to social media to suggest the Wimbledon finalist was “scared” of facing him and “obsessed” with him.

There has been plenty of tough talk in the past but Tomic is keen to show he is now about hard work.

Soon after beating Cozbinov, he was back on social media, posting his recipe for success.

“There are no secrets to success. It requires: preparation, hard work & learning from your mistakes,” his post said.

But there was still a bit of that Tomic spice.

Along with the inspirational message, there was a message for fans – and those still doubting his ability to come back – on his Instagram story.

“Thanks again for your support. F*** the haters, I’m gonna prove them wrong.”
