Teachers up for top gong

- ALISON PATERSON

THREE of FNQ’s most outstanding educators have been nominated for the prestigious TEACHX Awards, recognising the passion and commitment of all schooling sectors.

The 2022 finalists include Leanne Shead from St Monica’s College Cairns (SMCC) and Floriana Torelli from Cairns State High School (CSHS) in the Excellence in Teaching category, while Assistant Principal Daniel Tonon from Western Cape College, Weipa, is a finalist for the Excellent Leadership in Teaching and Learning award.

Ms Torelli said she was delighted her work contributing to the creation and implementation of a psychology program for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, and then the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority syllabus, before bringing it to CSHS, was recognised.

Ms Shead was nominated for providing students with opportunities to showcase their work through an array of public forums and competitions.

The nomination said the opportunities would not be possible without Ms Shead’s dedication to applying for grants, securing funds, and volunteering her time with professional networks and educational bodies.

Meanwhile, Mr Tonon said he was thrilled to have his 13 years in the profession recognised. “Teaching makes my heart beat, I’m passionate about making a positive difference,” he said.

Mr Tonon said he’s proud of the teamwork helping to forge a partnership with the Schools Up North pilot project that empowers teachers and support teams to respond to students’ emotional and mental health and the Western Cape Co-ordinated Care for Young People partnership between 14 government and non-government agencies which helps young people experiencing multiple and complex issues.

The winners will be announced on October 27.
