Survivor final all set for big party

- JAKE GARLAND

FAR North welcomes some of the best amateur golfers who will battle it out for the ultimate prize at Port Douglas.

Mirage Golf Club will be action packed this weekend with a different range of events including the Grand Finale of Drummond Golf Survivor Golf Series.

Survivor Golf tournament is a 2-person Ambrose competition, started in 2019 by Dave Cameron after he left QLD Ambulance.

The tournament is designed to help raise awareness and money for mental health.

This weekend, Mirage Country Club in Port Douglas will host 30 teams battling it out for the big prize.

Friday night will kick off the events with the International Long Drive competition which will see New Zealand and Australia’s best tee off against each other.

Saturday will give teams the final opportunity to practice on Mirage golf course before Sunday’s final.

Organiser Cameron said it was great to see the competition grow.

“I started it two and half years ago and it really has just exploded,” Cameron said.

“It is made to make amateurs feel like they are professionals.

“We do have two fatherson locally based teams and we have our first ever all female qualification from Atherton, which is very exciting.”

The competition is not like your normal golf event. It will be designed for spectators to come and watch and have fun rather than staying quiet.

“The 18th hole will be our DJ, party hole,” Cameron said.

“There is a $50,000 prize for a hole-in-one donated by Ken Frost Homes.

“And nearest-to-pin prize, Allan’s Pool Shop has donated a water slide.”

The champions will receive a $5000 voucher for a boat cruise leaving from Port Douglas.
