Man, 23, arrested over allegation­s linked to gun event

A 23-year-old Sunshine Coast man has been charged with firearm and drug offences connected to a shooting in Cairns last month.

It comes after two vehicles crashed and one man allegedly discharged a gun at another person in Edge Hill before fleeing on March 28.

Police confirmed the Marcoola man was charged on Tuesday with one count each of intend to cause grievous bodily harm and unlawful possession of firearms.

The 23-year-old was also charged with drug offences including possession of dangerous drug – (methylamph­etamine) – exceed schedule, possession of dangerous drug (MDMA) – exceed schedule, possession of dangerous drug (cocaine) – exceed schedule, possession of dangerous drug (anabolic steroid), possession of property suspected of being the proceeds of an offence (cash), and contraveni­ng order.

Following extensive investigat­ions, detectives from the Cairns and Brisbane criminal investigat­ion branches, including officers from the organised crime gangs group, executed a search warrant at a Lawnton address, north of Brisbane, on April 8.

Police seized firearms, ammunition, dangerous drugs, a sum of cash, and mobile phones.

A 23-year-old was taken into custody at the address, and charged. The accused man was remanded in custody and is due to reappear in the Brisbane Magistrate­s Court on June 3.

He is the third man to be charged over the incident in which a 43-year-old man was allegedly shot in the leg.

On March 31, a 35-year-old Varsity Lakes man was charged with acts intended to maim, disfigure, or disable and contraveni­ng an order about informatio­n necessary to access informatio­n stored electronic­ally. On April 4, detectives from Cairns criminal investigat­ion branch also charged a 43-yearold Edge Hill man with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

It is alleged the 23-year-old man was also involved in the incident.

It is understood those involved were known to each other.

The 23-year-old is expected to face Cairns Magistrate­s Court in May.
