Push for annual Anzac fixture

- Jake Garland

Ivanhoe Knights will look to make an Anzac Day game a regular clash as the club honoured the fallen men and women who have served in Australia and New Zealand defence forces.

The Knights returned to the memorial day on Thursday for the first time in three years, this time taking on Mossman Sharks.

Knights coach Aaron Lloyd said it would be awesome if they could work something out with the competition.

“It would be incredible if we could do it going forward, to be able to host games here,” Lloyd said. “Happy to do it with one club every year and make it that fixture.

“Or do it with a different club, just hopeful we can work something out.”

It was an incredible day hosted by the Knights as both clubs remembered the history of Australia and New Zealand.

“We have players who have family members, or grand parents who served in the wars,” Lloyd said. “It is great to be able to honour them while playing the sport we love as well.

“We got a bugler playing as well, which is awesome to be able to do that.

“It just means a lot to the players, the clubs and everyone really. We all know what Anzac Day means, we all remember those soldiers fallen and the soldiers who served, or are serving.”

The Knights returned to the winners’ circle in round 5 after a win over Edmonton Storm, ending their undefeated streak to start the season.

“The game against Atherton was a bit of a wake-up call the week before,” Lloyd said. “You don’t want to lose but sometimes they come at a good time. But the boys played really well last week, actually the whole club did. We got four wins, the maidens, colts, reserves and seniors all had a win.”

The Knights and Sharks clash finished after deadline.
