Shivers, what a cold morning

- Gen Kennedy gen.kennedy@thechronicle.com.au

TOOWOOMBA has shivered through its coldest morning in more than two years.

The mercury dropped to -0.1 degrees in the city early yesterday, with an apparent temperature of -4.7.

Oakey and Dalby both recorded their coldest August mornings in 10 years with temperatures of -5.6 degrees and -4.2 degrees respectively.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rick Threlfall said the cold weather, caused by cool south-westerly winds, was uncommon for August.

“There were a couple (of temperatures) that really stand out, it’s a little bit unusual but not sort of record breaking,” Mr Threlfall said.

“It was Toowoomba’s coldest morning this year…in fact it’s coldest morning since July 10, 2011.

“It certainly would have felt a lot colder than that, it felt like around about -5, -6, because the wind makes it feel colder than the thermometer is suggesting.”

Mr Threlfall said Darling Downs residents outside Toowoomba should expect frost over the next day or two, before temperatures rose slightly early next week.

“It gradually warms up toward the weekend, but overall there will be chilly starts.

“There’s just a gradual increase in minimum and maximum temperatures over the next few days, mainly due to the winds, which at the moment are coming from the south-west.

“There’ll be going from that to south-east to easterlies, which will bring in more moisture and less cool temperatures.”

A high fire danger will also come with the dry, windy conditions.
