QUEENSLAND Former Origin Greats executive chairman Gene Miles believes rugby league is a great vehicle to draw attention to the issues of indigenous employment in regional centres.

The organisation was in Toowoomba yesterday to launch its indigenous employment and careers expo scheduled to be held next month.

More than 100 students and representatives from government agencies, as well as training and employment providers, were on-hand at the Picnic Point Function Centre for the “Closing the Gap” breakfast forum.

“We have a great vehicle in rugby league that gets the attention of students,” Mr Miles said.

“Indigenous employment in regional and rural areas is a big issue.

“That is why we actively target students who are already at school,” he said.

Mr Miles said it would be the third time the expo visited Toowoomba on September 11 at the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre.

“These expos provide indigenous job seekers and school leavers with an opportunity to connect with Queensland employers, education and training providers and allow them to concentrate one-on-one with prospective employers about their futures,” he said.

“A big draw card at the expos is the appearance of a number of current and former Queensland origin stars.

“Many of the participants look up to their football heroes so what they have to say about the importance of a career can leave a lasting impression.”
