Backstage shift is well received

-

SOUTHERN Queensland Institute of TAFE hairdressing students have volunteered their styling skills for the Toowoomba Grammar School and Fairholme College’s adaptation of South Pacific.

Led by their teachers, five Certificate III hairdressing students primped, pampered and perfected the cast’s hairstyles just before they hit the Empire Theatre’s stage for the production.

SQIT hairdressing teacher Julie Nitschke said the students were still on a high from styling Thursday’s and Friday’s performances, and found the experience incredibly valuable.

“The ladies loved their time backstage. We always encourage students to volunteer for real-world, career-building opportunities, and for them to be involved in session styling at this stage of their learning is fantastic for increasing their skills, and adding to their portfolio,” Mrs Nitschke said.

Full-time Certificate III hairdressing student Nicole Greig agreed, saying: “Working on South Pacific was awesome. We did really well under pressure, and got great feedback. I can’t wait to do something like this again soon.”

SQIT offers hairdressing qualifications through to Certificate IV, and hosts workshops for industry throughout the year.
