POWER HAS HISTORY WITH TRACK
HAPPY HUNTING GROUND: Could Sonoma provide Will with a win?
Sonoma is definitely a good chance for us ... It's a track I've had a lot of success on.
— Will Power
SONOMA Raceway has been both cruel and kind to Will Power over the years.
The Toowoomba driver is looking forward to racing at the California circuit this weekend in the IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma and has a history with the track.
In 2009, Sonoma was far from a happy hunting ground for Power, with him suffering a broken back in practice before the Indy Grand Prix.
But, he returned the next year and won, before going backto-back at Sonoma a year later.
Following that winning double, the Team Penske driver finished second last year after starting on pole for the third year in a row to build on a successful run at the track.
This weekend he returns hoping his run continues.
The 32-year-old is enduring a frustrating series to date as he is still chasing his first victory of the year after being right in the mix for the drivers’ championship at this time of year for the past three series.
Power sits back in 11th place in the drivers’ championship this year but hopes Sonoma will be the place where he lands his long-awaited victory.
“Sonoma is definitely a good chance for us,” Power told indycar.com.
“Especially the year we’ve had, I can’t wait to get back there.
“It’s a track I’ve had a lot of success on. Although the competition has definitely heated up this year, we still expect to be running right at the front.”
Team Penske cars have won four of the past five races at Sonoma, including Power’s successes in 2010-11.
And with Power’s history at the track, and team mate Helio Castroneves leading the drivers’ championship, Penske could be right up there again.
