AUGUST

August 24 – The Cairns Underwater Film Festival. A celebratio­n of underwater photograph­y and filmmaking, which raises money for the Cairns Turtle Rehabilita­tion Project, Minke Whale Project and a new charity this year, Tangaroa Blue. The festival combines an underwater film and photo competitio­n, which mainly focuses on the rich and diverse beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea.

August 24 – Central Highlands Multicultu­ral

Festival. This year’s festival at the Emerald Showground will feature an eclectic mix of performanc­es from the Central Highlands’ best dance ensembles and multicultu­ral dance troupes, regional choirs, and local singing sensations. There will be plenty of fun for children in the Kids Zone.

This event is expected to attract more than 3000 competitor­s and includes a half-marathon (21.1km), 10.5km fun run and 4km kids’ scamper. There are few events run with a total waterfront aspect and boasting total road closure.

Magnetic Island Race Week. The six-day regatta for cruising and racing yachts is all about having fun. The event provides a relaxed, friendly atmosphere for all participan­ts including lively onshore activities such as social functions for competitor­s and spectators.

September 1-30 – 2013

Underwater Festival. Like last year, this year’s festival features a photo and video “shootout” competitio­n that happens simultaneo­usly across Australasi­a. Every dive site you can imagine becomes a shootout location. Join in one of the many Underwater Festival Fringe events that happen across Australasi­a.
