Quick thinking students raise alarm for fire
FIRE investigators are still working to confirm how a blaze ignited to destroy a young Dalby family’s home.
Students from the Dalby State High School Bunya Campus have been credited with raising the alarm after the teacher’s accommodation home went up in flames about 4.30pm on Thursday.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Dalby fire investigator Inspector Graham Cooke said there was little evidence to assist with the investigation.
“We haven’t been able to determine the cause,” Insp. Cooke said.
“We know the fire originated in the lounge area and a secondary fire was ignited through a gas leak from a barbecue outside the window.”
The home was engulfed with flames when firefighters and police arrived at the Bunya Hwy scene
It was extensively damaged by heat and smoke and all contents were destroyed.
The family has been provided with alternate accommodation, but it is yet to be decided whether the house can be repaired.
Insp Cooke said it was fortunate the occupants of the home had left about half an hour before the fire erupted.
“Although there were no casualties, this should serve as a reminder to the public to ensure they are careful with electrical appliances and have operational smoke alarms.”
Education Queensland Darling Downs and South West Region Director Greg Dickman said support was being provided to staff and students as required.
“Quick-thinking ‘day’ students raised the alarm with staff who immediately contacted emergency services,” Mr Dickman said.
Students from the school were safely evacuated from the area.
