Meeting seen as key turning point

- With Adam Davies

GOONDIWINDI Regional Council Mayor Graeme Scheu attended Queensland’s first Council Regional Table meeting held in Townsville recently.

The meeting was designed to ensure local government is sustainable and continues to prosper in the state.

Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli said the meeting of Queensland’s councils and the State Government was a turning point that would lighten the load on ratepayers across the state.

“The recommendations include getting value for money on construction and maintenance of assets, and local government pooling resources to reduce costs for their communities,” Mr Crisafulli said.

Mr Crisafulli said councils would now vote on nine recommendations to improve on the way councils conduct their business.

“We are confident within a few weeks we will have a clear way forward, but already there is an overwhelming desire to improve the way we do business together,” he said.
