SURROUNDED by friends and family, long time Toowoomba resident May Bishop celebrated her 90th birthday at DownSteam Tourist Railway and Museum.

Mrs Bishop was born on August 18, 1923 to Jemima and Joe Powell.

She was 18-years-old when she married Ron Bishop in Nobby on January 1, 1942. Together the couple had five children – Bevan, Errol, Judy, Robyn and Darryl.

The two lived in Toowoomba for most of their married life and lived at 102 Hill St until they sold their land to Woolworths in 1962. The block of land now houses the Newtown Shopping Centre.

The two then moved to 2a Lendrum St, where they stayed for 14 years and then moved on to 14 Lister St.

Mr Bishop died in 1994 and Mrs Bishop stayed on until 2006, trying to keep the garden looking beautiful.

Both Mr and Mrs Bishop were heavily involved in the Toowoomba Rose Society – Mrs Bishop is a life member – and they often won the Champion Rose of the Annual Rose Society Show and also Champion Rose of the Royal Toowoomba Show.

Mrs Bishop now lives at the Brodribb home where she cares for some plants, does some sewing and makes jam when fruit is available.

She looks forward to dressing up her walker for the Brodribb carnival competition.

Her daughter Robyn said she is still very active and enjoys visits from family and friends.
