A TOOWOOMBA burger shop is testing the waters in the potentially vast ocean of franchising with its expansion to a second store.

Phat Burgers is set to open its second Ruthven St outlet at the Seven/11 service station complex near the intersection of Bridge St on Sunday.

Co-owner Richard May-Steers said avoiding traffic congestion was key in the decision to expand.

“Having a shop on the northside makes it easier for people to get to us,” Mr May-Steers said.

The demand for the shop’s home deliveries on the northside of town was another factor.

Deliveries were introduced as an incentive for customers who did not want to negotiate traffic associated with reaching the CBD store.

“I know myself I don’t want to drive through there so I imagine the customers are the same.”

He said the new shop would be a temporary location until the business could move into the Northpoint Shopping Centre, which is being constructed at the intersection of Ruthven and North Streets.

“We’ve always had it as a vision.

“This shop is going to help us work out the processes for creating other shops.”

Based on how the expansion went, he said it was hoped the business could open a new shop annually.

The opening will come only a few weeks before the owners celebrate six years in business at their CBD store.

Mr May-Steers said Sunday’s festivities would include slider burger giveaways, samples and a DJ.
