THE families of two young basketballers killed in a car crash have been encouraged by great support for a charity fundraiser being held in their honour.

A year and one week has passed since Stephanie Mylonas, 20, and Stacey Richter, 21, were killed in a crash on the Burnett Hwy.

Stacey’s father Graham said his family marked the anniversary by spreading his daughter’s ashes from a boat about 300m from the shore in front of the Maroochydore Surf Club.

The Pittsworth family chose the location as it was one of Stacey’s favourites.

“We’ve been going there for years,” Mr Richter said. “Stacey just loved the water.” Meanwhile, Stephanie’s father Jimmy said his family marked the day by having a barbecue lunch together and visiting Stephanie’s grave.

“It was just a home thing,” Mr Mylonas said. “It was quite good actually.” Both men have been heartened by the support for a memorial golf weekend being planned at the Pittsworth Golf Club.

A two-person ambrose competition will be held on October 19 and an 18-hole stableford competition will be held on October 20.

Mr Richter said the proceeds would be donated to the Children’s Hospital and Beauaraba Living Pittsworth.

“We just wanted a little bit of positive to come out of this,” Mr Richter said.
