Withcott needs a speed camera

A PUSH to have a fixed speed camera installed at the bottom of the Toowoomba Range has been raised during a sitting of State Parliament.

Member for Lockyer Ian Rickuss has told his colleagues of the plight of Withcott residents in regards to road safety.

“Withcott itself is the unfortunate village at the bottom of the range which has thousands of trucks and cars travelling through it every day,” Mr Rickuss said.

“It is a lovely village that has a major highway right through the middle of it.”

He said the town’s problem arose from traffic reaching the end of its descent from the Range.

“A lot of trucks, particularly those coming eastbound and other vehicles, are travelling at excess speeds,” he said.

“I have been working really hard to try to get a set speed camera in the area.

“It is one of those few communities which wants a fixed speed camera in the area.”

Main Roads said the department would work with police to investigate the viability of a speed camera at the bottom of the Range.

“Fixed speed camera locations are selected by looking at sections of road with a history of crashes that result from speeding and are difficult or unsafe to monitor using other enforcement methods,” the spokeswoman said.

Mr Rickuss said the push for safer roads needed to continue.

“Unfortunately, the Warrego Hwy is quite a dangerous strip of road,” Mr Rickuss said.

“We need to improve people’s attitude to driving as well.

“It is not only the highway; it is also their attitude to driving.”
