TWO teenagers have suffered serious burns after accelerant was thrown on a fire at a backyard party in Harristown.

Neighbours of the Melody Dr home say they had feared the teenage party would end badly.

HARRISTOWN resident Lyndel Sheedy had a feeling something terrible was going to happen when she went to bed while a teenage party was going on next door.

Her fears eventuated within half an hour of turning in for the night.

A 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy had been seriously burnt when a boy at the party threw accelerant onto a backyard fire shortly after midnight on Saturday.

Bystanders at the Melody Dr home acted quickly to remove the cover from a backyard pool and throw the girl in to extinguish the flames.

She suffered serious burns to 60 per cent of her body while the boy suffered serious burns to 40 per cent of his body.

They were rushed to Toowoomba Hospital before being

flown to Royal Brisbane Hospital.

A Department of Community Safety spokeswoman said two other teenagers also received minor injuries in the explosion.

Mrs Sheedy said she and her husband had been frustrated by the teenage parties held at her neighbour’s house.

“I said to my husband something bad was going to happen,” Mrs Sheedy said.

Another Melody Dr resident, who did not want to be named, said her daughter was at the party and witnessed the horrible incident.

She said it had proved very traumatic for her.

“I’m in shock because it could have been my daughter,” she said.

Investigations are continuing.
