Members celebrate important birthday
TOOWOOMBA’S Soroptimist International members came together recently, not only to celebrate the holiday season, but to also a great milestone – the organisation’s 40th birthday.
Correspondence secretary Patricia White-Davidson said the celebrations at the Downs Club went well and it had been a lovely evening.
“We had a few formal events; some of the members had long service badges presented to them,” she said. “We certainly had a good time.”
Foundation members of the club were Marianne Phillips, Josie Lambert, and Patricia White-Davison.
Members who were given long-service badges included Alison Langdon who has been a member for 30 years, Merryn Hodges and Adrienne Jocumsen, who have served for more than 20 years, and Margaret Durnan, who has been an active member for 15 years.
The club, a worldwide organisation whose members inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls through a global network of members, received its charter on December 10, 1973 at a formal dinner at Clewley’s Motel.
During the 40 years since, 19 presidents have taken on the role of leading the club.
Projects supported by Soroptimist International of Toowoomba include local developments such as the Toowoomba Youth Service and Fresh Hope has well as national and international projects like petitions on treating osteoporosis and provision of facilities in Sierra Leone and New Guinea.
