Team jinx feels the heat

-

I’M MOSTLY pretty level-headed when it comes to tried-and-true sporting superstitions.

There’s a few silly rituals I can’t seem to let go, like wearing my ragged old Queensland jersey during every State of Origin, but it’s all a bit tongue-in-cheek

I don’t honestly believe that my actions will affect what is happening on the field.

The Brisbane Heat however are doing their best every game to convince me otherwise.

I wasn’t a big fan of Twenty20 cricket for a long time but I’ve jumped on board since the inception of the Big Bash League.

I love the Queensland Bulls in the Sheffield Shield and the Heat are just an extension of that, with a few added bonuses like Daniel Vettori and his amazing beard.

As much as I’ve come to love the Heat though, I’m worried that my support is actually bad for them.

The best way to watch sport, in my opinion, is from the stands so I try to make it to two or three Big Bash games every summer.

But for all the times I’ve pulled on my teal shirt to cheer on the Heat live, I’ve never actually seen them win a game.

I’m not sure where things are going wrong for Brisbane every time I head along to the Gabba.

The Heat won the Big Bash title last summer so they’re clearly capable of winning games.

But I’m like kryptonite to the Brisbane boys and they seem to crumble every time I go near them.

I didn’t think much of this worrying statistic at first but I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever see them win a game live.

The curse was in full effect when the Heat played the Hobart Hurricanes a few weeks ago.

I was convinced we had the game wrapped up when Brisbane batted first and smashed a then Big Bash record total of 209.

There was more chance of taking a catch from the stands as the Heat sent the ball flying over the rope for six nine times.

But it all went pear-shaped when the Hurricanes walked to the crease and blasted 210 in reply with four balls to spare.

I still can’t grasp how Brisbane lost that game.

Sure, it was a fantastic game to watch but not when it continued my run of outs when watching the Brisbane Heat live.

I really hope it’s all in my head and the Heat are back on track after extending the Sydney Thunder’s losing streak to 18 games on Wednesday night.

And I’m going to put it to the test tonight when I once again head to the Gabba to see the boys in action.

I’m almost considering trading my teal shirt for a green one and cheering the Melbourne Stars in hopes that it will bring them down.

But even though the Heat have never won, every game I’ve been to at the Gabba has been thriller.

Games that go down to the last over aren’t good for the old ticker but they’re great entertainment.

If my presence again proves the Heat’s undoing, at least I know I’m in for an exciting 40 overs.
