THE South Toowoomba Tigers A-grade side has the chance to make history in today’s Premier League Bowls finals at Pine Rivers.

The club has never won a Premier League title in either grade but the Souths A-graders stormed into the play-offs this year.

The Tigers toppled former champions Helensvale last weekend to finish the season as minor premiers and earn a passage straight through to the preliminary final.

Ian Groves and his rink of Stu Cameron, Mal Briese and Brad Fiedler were also the best performed team for the season after winning nine of their 10 games.

It gives the Tigers every reason to be confident but they’ll also have to overcome the club’s terrible record playing on the carpet at Pine Rivers.

“South Toowoomba has never won a game in either grade on carpet,” PLQ chairman and Souths member Trevor Briese said.

“It’s a totally different animal. Your weight control has got to be perfect.”

While the Tigers have never won the Premier League, they made the grand final at the top level two years ago.

And after North Toowoomba became the first club from the region to win the men’s state pennant flag last year, Briese believed Toowoomba bowlers could match it with the best from anywhere.

“It’s just a fantastic effort. They’ve struggled from year-to-year but this year they’ve just come out firing,” he said.
