Discipline proves key for young Clydesdales

10 players from both sides placed on report

TOOWOOMBA Clydesdales coach Scott Hart says his team needs to work on its discipline to be a force in the FOGS Cup Colts Challenge.

The Clydesdales are coming off a fiery 28-18 loss to Redcliffe which saw 10 players from both sides placed on report.

It was a close contest but Hart said silly penalties and poor attacking decisions hurt Toowoomba’s chances.

“I thought the effort was there. It was a pretty tough game,” he said.

“(But) we gave away 10 penalties which is not good when you’re trying to build pressure against the better sides.

“Our completion rate was really high. Our percentage was up over 85%. That’s terrific ball control.

“There were times in that game where we really had them under pressure but just our discipline let us down.”

Hart has made a few changes for today’s clash with Wynnum Manly at Gold Park, with skipper Luke Ash moving into the front row and Stuart Bougoure coming on to the bench.

Centre Lochlan Ross is also back which will be a huge boost for the Clydesdales’ goal-kicking after they kicked just one from four last weekend.

“We usually have good battles with Wynnum. They’re a pretty big and fast side. We’re not real huge so we’ve got to play smart footy,” he said.

“There was a few little silly things with the footy, and if we can get our structures together, then we should be pretty hard to beat, given we’re at home again.”

Kick-off between the Clydesdales and Wynnum Manly is at 4.30pm today.

The game will come after the Clydesdales play the Northern Pride in the under-16s and under-18s and the Toowoomba Fillies play their first match.
