MY LIFE RUINED

Girlfriend quits, jobs dry up because of murder probe

- Stuart Cumming stuart.cumming@thechronicle.com.au

THE man at the centre of a Goondiwindi murder investigation says the police probe has ruined his life.

Robert Trebeck did not want to talk about the details of his involvement with Alexis Jeffery in the early hours of March 16, however, he said being named as a person of interest in her death had caused a great deal of stress.

Mr Trebeck moved to the Goondiwindi area about Christmas last year so he could be closer to family members.

He said he and his fiancée were living at a property of which he was caretaker.

CCTV images released in the weeks after the mother-of-three’s death showed him holding hands with Alexis as they walked along Marshall St about 2.15am on March 16. Police said she was then seen walking alone in a park near the town’s swimming pool between 3am and 3.30am.

Her body was found on the bank of the Macintyre River near the back of the town’s cultural centre about 10.50am.

Mr Trebeck said police spoke with him the next day, but had not contacted him since.

He said he had called police four times since the initial interview.

“He (police officer) doesn’t want to talk to me unless I change my statement,” Mr Trebeck said.

He said the investigation had led to him being kicked off the property where he had been living, prompting a move to the Townsville area.

The release of the CCTV footage pre-empted the breakdown of his relationship with his fiancée. “It has ruined me. “I have lost my girlfriend over all of this. We were engaged.”

He said potential employers were holding off giving him a job until his name was cleared.

“Everyone down there is pointing the finger at me, but I believe someone knows more than they are letting on.

“I really hope they (police) find someone soon or leave me alone because it has really hurt me, all of this.”

Darling Downs district officer Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hart said Mr Trebeck had been in contact with police.

Det. Act. Insp. Hart said Mr Trebeck was a person of interest in the case, but not a suspect.

“He is the last person we know who was with her (Ms Jeffery) while she was alive,” Det. Insp. Hart said.

He said forensic work was being done to confirm the cause of Ms Jeffery’s death.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
