City grows as a hub of culture

-

RECORD eisteddfod numbers confirm Toowoomba is a growing cultural hub in the region.

Part one of this year’s competition might be over but the organisers are still reeling from the event’s success – and handling the registrations for part two.

City of Toowoomba Eisteddfod management committee secretary Annie Callaghan said there had been standing room only in the Empire auditorium during the choir performances with several choirs of nearly 100 participating students with their supporters.

“They were the biggest numbers we’ve seen so far. There were more than 3000 entries in the first part,” she said.

“It was a great reflection of the increasing popularity of school choirs.”

Ms Callaghan said the committee would account for the huge numbers in planning for the next section which will start in July. However, it wasn’t a question of a change of venue.

“Toowoomba is proud of its Empire Theatre. The students go backstage and see the workings of the theatre and love performing there.”

“We acknowledge the support Toowoomba people give to the eisteddfod.”
