Headspace to open by year’s end
A NEW Headspace centre to help at-risk youths is on track to open in Toowoomba by the end of the year.
A consortium of organisations has been selected to operate the centre under lead agency United Synergies, a not-for-profit organisation that began its life as the Noosa Youth Service in 1989.
Mental and general health services, drug and alcohol support and job agencies will all function within the Headspace centre.
Headspace Toowoomba independent chair Professor Lorelle Burton said the vision was to create a comprehensive health service for 12 to 25-year-olds, with the service viewed as a preferred place for young people to get support.
“The primary objective of Headspace Toowoomba is to increase the co-ordination and integration of mental health services, general practitioners, drug and alcohol services, vocational support and referral information to assist in preventing young people falling though the gaps,” Ms Burton said.
United Synergies will oversee the establishment of the service, working alongside providers like the Toowoomba Youth Service.
“The centre will be created and designed by young people, for young people — something in which they can have direct input and influence — a safe, interesting and helpful youth friendly space,” Toowoomba Youth Service manager Michelle Wiersma said.
