Monument comes to life

-

chronicle.com.au KILLARNEY residents can soon get in touch with their pioneer past with the installation of a new monument in Killarney Park.

Local palaeontologist and natural history artist Paul Stumkat is well known across the region for creating stunning public sculptures as well as life-like models of dinosaurs used in museums and university collections.

The latest piece is the beginnings of a bullock team, done on behalf of the Killarney Historical Society.

“Each sculpture was individually sculpted in clay and then moulded using a museum technique I have perfected over 30 years,” he said.

“They are modelled off the original shorter legged Devon bullocks which were commonly used in the more mountainous Killarney terrain.

“Large bullocks often broke their legs while the smaller bullocks negotiated obstacles more efficiently.”

The monument will be officially dedicated on Saturday at 11am and the free event will include traditional bullocky food, a world champion whip cracker demonstration, a cash prize for the best amateur whip cracker and plenty more.

A free reception complete with wine and cheese will also be held at the Killarney Historical Society after the festivities.
