Back-to-back Cups for Grammar boys

-

TOOWOOMBA Grammar Junior is fast establishing itself as an Aussie Rules powerhouse after securing back-to-back titles in the boys’ Brisbane Lions Cup.

Grammar went through the carnival undefeated to record its second title win in style.

Our Lady of the Southern Cross College was their biggest threat with the four-time champions testing the “Ting Tongs” in the opening clash.

But this was the closest any school was to get to the Grammar boys, with the “Ting Tongs” going on to win by 15 points followed by seven-goal victories over Our Lady of Lourdes and Concordia Primary.

Grammar was guaranteed a place in the final after going undefeated in the round robin stages while OLOSCC finished with two wins to also make the decider.

There was nothing between the arch rivals in the opening exchanges of the grand final as neither side wanted to give an inch to their opponents.

The hard-running and smart play by Grammar in the second quarter set up the back-to-back titles as they piled on four unanswered goals.

With the lead out to five-goals after the main break, OLOSCC held their own and made the Ting Tongs work hard for the second half.

The Dalby school finished the game off with a goal but the damage was already done as Toowoomba Grammar secured their second Brisbane Lions Cup with an impressive 9.13 (67) to 2.1 (13) victory.

Toowoomba Grammar will now represent the Darling Downs at the SEQ Brisbane Lions Cup finals in Brisbane.

OLOL may have finished fourth overall but the school didn’t walk away empty handed as rising star and Toowoomba Tigers junior Bailey Erdmann took out the boys division Most Valuable Player by two votes.
