Breakfast honours saint
DIRECTOR of Catholic education John Borserio joined teachers from the Toowoomba diocese to mark the feast of St John de La Salle, patron saint to teachers around the world.
Along with Mr Borserio, the group was joined by Father John Quinlan, vicar general of the diocese of Toowoomba.
“The Catholic Education Office has much to celebrate, given the commitment and dedication of the teachers who provide quality Catholic education to over 10, 000 students throughout the diocese,” Mr Borserio said.
“This is our 10th annual St John Baptist de La Salle breakfast.
“This event is just one of the ways in which we recognise the vital role of our teachers and remind them that they are important contributors in the holistic education of students.
“St John Baptist de la Salle’s advancements of education are still evident in our schools today.
“It is because of his foresight that children are taught in their home language, with a curriculum that builds on what they already know, by teachers who are trained professionals.
“Reflecting on the contributions of St John Baptist de La Salle from the 1700s makes us aware that our decisions as educators must be made with a long-term view given what we do today may endure as practice long after we are gone.
“If we keep at our heart the de La Salle brothers’ Twelve Virtues of a Good Teacher: seriousness, silence, humility, prudence, wisdom, patience, reserve, meekness, zeal, vigilance, piety and generosity, we can be sure to provide a great education to our students now and for the future.”
The diocese of Toowoomba has 32 Catholic schools providing education and pastoral care for more than 10,000 students.
