Toowoomba stars pack out South West teams
City fields strong contingents for men’s and women’s teams
TOOWOOMBA players will lead the charge for South West at next weekend’s Hockey Queensland Super League in Brisbane.
The South West teams include the best players from Toowoomba and Ipswich, with more than half of the men’s and women’s squads hailing from the Garden City.
The men’s team is the defending champion after finishing last year’s rain-affected tournament in first place, and selectors have stuck with the core of that side.
Ten Toowoomba players will line up for the Lumberjacks, including Kris Glass, David Watts and co-captain Craig Smith.
They’re all in superb form, too, after Toowoomba took out its second-straight Queensland open title last month.
Goalkeeper Watts played a starring role as Toowoomba held Lachlan Brownhalls, James Kruger, Brent Garske, Kris Glass, Craig Smith (co-capt),
Nathan Case, Joel Torrisi, Matthew Siebuhr, Jared Klease,
David Watts (GK) out Townsville 3–2 in golden goal, and he will be primed for another big effort at the Super League.
Meanwhile, the South West women’s team is dominated by Toowoomba players, with 12 of the 17-strong squad from the region.
Hockeyroos player Rebecca Reuter-Dwyer will captain the side, which also includes Australia Country reps Aleisha Neumann, Amanda Ross and Kelly Gillard.
The Lumberjills finished fourth last year and will be keen to build on that performance, with much of the squad returning.
