Free CBD bus loop a possibility
INNER-city commuters could soon be enjoying a free shuttle bus service if a free trial is successful.
Toowoomba Regional Council wants to have a three-month trial of a free shuttle loop in the Toowoomba CBD for aged and disabled members of the community.
Council discussed a proposed trial at this week’s Environment and Community Committee monthly meeting, with the final decision to be endorsed at next Tuesday’s general meeting.
Environmental Health and Parks and Recreation portfolio leader Cr Sue Englart said the idea had grown following a number of reports of elderly residents having difficulty accessing the new temporary library and mini-CBD library in Ruthven St.
“The former library site was located near a major bus stop, and some concerns had been raised with council,” Cr Englart said.
“It was then decided to take it a step further and explore a loop service to make the CBD easier to navigate for these residents.
“If we find there is adequate demand, we will look at expanding the service to a second vehicle, and conversely, if the service is not popular, then it will end after three months.”
Cr Englart said the service could also be a “toe in the water” when it came to subsidised transport services through council.
“If this proves popular, we may look at introducing other loops and services,” she said.
“Sustainable transport is a big issue for the future of the city as it grows. Council is very aware that public transport needs to be improved in Toowoomba, and creating a stress-free, low-cost way to access the CBD is beneficial to everyone.”
